Very Rare Antique Kerman
An incredibly rare and enormous 19th century Kerman carpet. It is almost impossible to find a rug of this size and age on the market, they are still mainly within the grand houses and palaces for which they were made. Isolated from other centres of carpet and rug weaving, Kerman is situated in a desolate area in South East Iran. These rugs are extremely beautiful and, in the case of the tightly woven and decorated examples such as this, recall Persian miniature paintings. Predominantly floral, with elaborate central medallion and radiating foliates repeated in the oat-meal ground. Repeating guard borders elaborately decorated.
Condition:
Lots of wear, with historical but professional repairs. Cashmere has been woven to the damaged areas and then tinted with dyes in the traditional manner. It is free of stains and odour and actually has survived extremely well given its age. It is almost impossible to find these in tact and with great colour. It has been professionally washed (not amateur cleaning) by a respected authority in the antique rug trade. Please arrange a viewing if you wish to find out more.
